Shaker style Kitchens are they still trendy?

Shaker kitchens, named after the Shaker community a religious community the originated in the 18th century.
A long time favourite in the kitchen world with certain variations having been around for many years. They rapidly became popular because of their ease of construction, traditionally made from Pine, Birch, Maple. Usually the easier obtained timbers.
The appeal for the modern home however are the clean simple lines and the rise in the trend towards minimalism in the home.

The modern trend and its appeal is to create an uncluttered space with minimal lines, yet also creating a more timeless crisp, fresh look, that transcends fads is certainly appealing for many people. After all you have to live with this usually for a number of years.
It is quite a versatile style and can be modified to suit, made with a flat drawer front, still looking uncluttered even on modern drawer packs with drawers stacked on top of one another.
wide frame shaker kitchen
The Markham shaker kitchen here on the left uses a wide frame to create a real statement.
The Markham shaker kitchen is also made to look like a real painted Oak door but is in fact a replica which is very cost effective. In fact even the most eagle eyed people would struggle to spot the difference between this and the real Oak, putting this within most peoples price range.

The Balmoral shaker kitchen uses the same type of material only in a narrower frame.
The other trend is towards housings for pantry or larder units, you may have an oven such as an Aga or Rangemaster or if you are unable to bend down, tall housings are ideal to place your integrated oven into.
The shaker kitchens have that certain look that really seems to suit taller units as shown above in our Huntley painted shaker kitchen.
Painting the Oak lets the grain of the timber show through but then enables you to change to colour to match your home decor.
The look of the timber showing through also creates a real tactile feel to your kitchen that most people really admire.

Modern Shaker kitchen collections really do have something for everyone, many available in traditional oak colours or painted finishes. With solid oak or character oaks, or mix the two, showing painted and oak all tastefully mixed, the choice is yours. You can even mix colours as shown in the picture above.

Alternately it could be a slightly more complicated design by using a raised centre panel as shown in the picture on the left, the Maywell shaker kitchen shows this to great effect.

Obvious a number of embellishments can be made to create interest within the design, a fancy handle or a simple small knob, a traditional cup handle or drop handle maybe? A modern Chrome handle or a burnished copper or wrought iron?
It's all down to your own taste.

There has lately been a slight drift to adding minor flourishes by adding subtleties such as small bevels within the frame, wider frames, narrower frames you name it.

I think you will agree that in the shaker collection there really is something for everyone, we are able to also produce these in any colour you desire, in any style with any handle the choice is yours. We also create beautiful bespoke creations handmade and painted by ourselves in nay size, please visit our bespoke page.

I've been hearing of shaker styles a lot and seems like its an evergreen style. Are curved edges part of shaker style ? Coz there seems to be too many corners and I'd like a few soft edges in my kitchen

Hello Jessica,
The shaker style is essentially a easy way of constructing a door in a simple manner. You can add softer lines to this in a few ways, for example in our bespoke Eden Manor range through our sister website you can 'soften' the whole look by adding a gently curved end panel, if you follow this link you will see what I mean: https://www.distinctivefurniture.co.uk/uploads/1/7/2/3/17239524/brindley-21_orig.jpg
Also you could add a raised centre panel such as on our shaker Maywell kitchen this 'softens' the look somewhat as well.
As we make a lot of our own doors, we can also create a more unique look by rounding over the edges of the doors, again softening the look. The other solution is to add a curved end unit which is a more obvious way of doing this.
If you need any help creating your own look then please do not hesitate to contact me directly and I would be only too happy to discuss any options available to you.
Regards Tony
